Sándor Szathmári pri / on Julio Baghy

(Ĉerpaĵo / Excerpt with translation by Ralph Dumain)

Kantu Baghy, nia bardo,
Bardo de l’ sincera ardo,
Kun antaŭa fort’:
Vian larman emocion
Kaj fajreran ironion
Aŭdos sud’ kaj nord’.

The critics are right: Baghy may have naively been chasing mirages, often naively, childishly, but (you are welcome to laugh at me, too), nonetheless, I find his words congenial:

Humaneness is the highest idealism. The natural bellicosity of people should be directed to extra-human affairs to make at least a tolerable purgatory out of the present hell on Earth. Human beings are individuals with minds that can be educated and guided and a future century will finally be able to create a reality out of what today appears a utopia. There must come a time when technological progress will be followed up with the practical application of philosophical progress. [from the Silver jubilee volume Arĝenta Duopo]

The contradiction between the human combative instinct and technical progress, the problem whether the human race will exterminate itself with its contemporary servants, the machines—this is the problem that torments me most.

I have no hope for the modification of instinct by education alone. Baghy does have hope. I would be delighted if he were to win the bet! Without romantic hope and dedication nothing has ever yet been accomplished in the world. And truly: Esperanto must be the camp of those who hope.

Now, when we wish for his complete recovery and wish for peace and Papa [a play on similar-sounding words] for the world, let me close these lines with the verses of Hilda Dresen from 1937 [. . . .]
