Mother Tongue

Language is by its nature autocratic.  
So in-bred is our mother tongue, so dear
to our occasions, that its massive static

authority blindfolds us, and we fear
the very notion that it might have faults.
We’re not aware that only glints appear

of ore imbedded in its dull basalts;
we never see how crazy is its frame,
nor drawbacks to its labyrinthine vaults.

Like feudal peasants, unprotesting, tame,
we hoist its heavy weight and call it light:
ignore it where it’s crippled, ugly, lame,

and view the serried language with delight.

Ankaŭ la lingvo estas aŭtokrato.
Al nia nacilingvo ni kutimas
ĝis tia grado, ke l’ aŭtoritato

masiva nin blindumas, kaj ni timas
eĉ pensi, ke ĝi povus esti manka.
Ni ne rimarkas, ke nur parto glimas

en mezo de inerta bulo ganga;
ni ne rimarkas la struktur-frenezon
kaj ĝenojn de la labirinto stranga.

Servute, sen protesto, ĝian pezon
ni levas kaj deklaras ĝin leĝera;
ignoras kriplon, disonancon, lezon,

admire pri la lingvo aglomera!
