Stubbornness

Over the meadow, with unruffled chomping
the sheep and cattle ruminate content.
Against the green, white cloudlets' lively romping:
the sharp‑beaked gulls are shrieking in dissent.

In the wide ditch, behind the mother coot,
swim primly little gray‑black balls of fluff;
awkwardly paddling with each clumsy foot,
for this world's journey confident enough.

Beneath its fruit the elder bows to earth,
black berries full of promise and alive.
The green of tiny chestnuts gibes at dearth;
all triumphs in the struggle to survive.

Though Man's misconduct tries to break its sinews,
abundant life still stubbornly continues.

Au Clair de la Lune

High on a dune, and gasping from the climb,
in happy rapture we surveyed the scene.
A splendid day, majestic and sublime,
with timid bursts of sunshine in between.

On the horizon lay a silver thread:
the smooth sea calling with inviting glints.
A wave‑like chain of dunes was round us spread,
decked out in panoply of autumn tints.

On the right hand of the sea the village lay
in the expanse, a toy left after play;
silence was everywhere, no sound at all . . .

when suddenly, with child‑like limpid power
and pearly brightness, from the belfry's tower
came dancing out the old French madrigal.

Obstino

Sur la herbej', trankvile muelante,
bovinoj, ŝafoj en kontent' remaĉas.
Enverde viglas blanka nub' konstante:
pintbekaj mevoj kriĉe kverelaĉas.

Fosaĵe, post fulikpatrin', pedante
lanugfloketoj grizenigraj naĝas;
mallerte per piedetoj padelante,
plenfide ili en ĉi mond' vojaĝas.

Sambukon terenklinas pezaj fruktoj,
la nigraj beroj plenas de promeso.
Kaŝtanbuletoj verdas ĝis eksceso;
triumfoj ĉiaj en porvivaj luktoj.

Kvankam malsaĝ' de homo ĝin subminas,
abundas, daŭras vivo kaj obstinas.

Au clair de la lune

Sur alta dun' anhele pro la peno,
la panoramon ĝuis ni, ravite.
Majestis paca tago en sereno,
timema suno brilis intermite.

Fore ĉe l'horizont' arĝentfadeno:
la glata maro kuŝas lulinvite.
Ĉirkaŭe ondas blonda dunoĉeno,
de la aŭtunaj farboj ornamite.

Ludile en ĉi vasta dunpejzaĝo,
dekstre de l'mar' situas la vilaĝo;
silentas ĉie, eĉ nenia sono . . .

sed jen, subite, hele gajinfane
perlas la franca kanto diafane,
flirtante el la tura kariljono.
