WHERE FROM, WHERE TO?

To all my former selves I am a stranger,
To me unknown are babe and boy and stripling.
The naturally given joy, nostalgia,
I may not know; the proofs not in my keeping.

And yet, when riffling through my memory bank,
are there not found some fragments of recall?
There are; there are, of course, a few, but scant
the uncertain portraits, dimly fit and small

that ebb from strange illusion of past time.
The consciousness of memory fault beclouds me:
Why can the missed dimension not be mine?
What is this seeming caul that so beshrouds me?

Yet I existed, lived, fulfilled my being:
was present in the flesh; the mind detached.
All seemed to be of darkness, self-unseeing.
And here my mirrored self looks, doubting, back.

Mi estas fremda al pasintaj mioj,
nek bebon, knabon nek junulon konas;
ne trafas min kutimaj nostalgioj,
neniun vivarkivon mi disponas.

Ĉu vere? se mi rastas mian menson,
ĉu ne troveblas memorĉifonetoj?
Jes, kelkaj kompreneble. Sed maldenson
kaj nebulecon havas ĉi portretoj

el la iamo strange iluzia.
Sentiĝas tio grava memorperdo:
kial do mankas dimensio tria?
kial min kovras nubo de necerto?

Mi ja ekzistis, spertis kaj plenumis:
ĉeestis mi ne mense, nur fizike.
Ŝajnas, ke ĉiam ĉirkaŭ mi mallumis.
Spegulon alrigardas mi skeptike.
