BARRY, JR ESPERANTO DAY JULY 19, 1987 BY THE MAYOR OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA A PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, July 18 ‑ 22, 1987, the Esperanto League for North America will host its thrity‑fifth national convention in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, this year also marks the 100th anniversary of the international language Esperanto; and WHEREAS, Esperanto was created as a language for internatioal communication that helps to promote worldwide friendships based on the most common words in European languages, and also serve as a language preparation course for foreign languages; and WHEREAS, the World Esperanto Assocation has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize this year and it is fitting that we set aside time to commend this organization for its contributions: NOW, THEREFORE, I THE MAYOR OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, do hereby proclaim Sunday, July 19, 1987 as "ESPERANTO DAY" in Washington, D.C., and call upon the residents of this city to join me in sending best wishes for a happy anniversary celebration.
