The Poems Hidden in the Ghetto
to Julian Tuwim in Warsaw

You smiled across the lofty room
trellised with shadows of green light,
the curtain flapped and lapsed again,
the city grumbled out of sight
below, like reasserted pain
or Lazarus muttering in his tomb.

“The manuscripts were buried deep,
we dug and found the way was barred.
A man across the lintel lay,
a ragged skeleton on guard,
who crouched to keep the fires at bay,
the cracking skies, the blackening gap. . .”

Man at the quickmost root of things
goes grimly into absolute loss,
Man in the rambling storms of doom
struggling defiant on the cross:
the New Man risen from the tomb
lifts up his merry heart and sings.
